How to properly control humidity at home?

Summer invariably brings periods of heatwave, these days of intense heat accompanied by suffocating humidity. While this situation can bother many people, high humidity can cause serious health problems in some people.

Comfort level varies with each individual. Generally, a person feels comfortable when the ambient conditions allow them to maintain their normal temperature (around 37°C). The relative humidity level, combined with certain factors (age, clothing, level of physical activity, state of health, degree of fatigue, etc.) will influence the temperature felt by each person.

Using an air conditioner will provide an ideal temperature and thus promote better quality of sleep. A portable dehumidifier (in a room) is also an option to consider if there is no air conditioner.

It is recommended to set the temperature between 20°C and 22°C – and even up to 24°C for the elderly. It is desirable to maintain a uniform temperature throughout the house since moving from one hot area to another colder one can cause more or less serious health inconveniences, particularly for the elderly or those in fragile health.

The relative humidity level is also decisive for the quality of the indoor environment for health.

A relative humidity level below 30%, contributing to ambient air that is too dry, can cause, among other things, breathing difficulties for people suffering from asthma. Conversely, a rate greater than 60% will create an environment favoring mold and the proliferation of mites, again causing certain respiratory problems.

The ideal relative humidity percentage for a healthy home should be around 50% in summer and 30% in winter.
